Like everybody else. . .

1) Who have you met in real life after meeting them online? I don't really think I've met anyone online. I prefer people I meet in real life.

2) Who do you want to meet? I would like to meet a lot of people, especially someone who wants to give me a job.

3) If you could punch one person, who would it be? Oh jeez, just one punch? If I punched our president, do you think I could knock some sense into him?

4) Name one person you love, and why: I LOVE my grandma! She is the most caring and most accepting person I've ever known. She's really been there for me.

5) Who is your enemy? I'd like to think that I don't have one.

6) Who is your oldest friend? How long have you known them? Alicia is probably my friend that I have known the longest. We met sometime in elementary school, but only became close during high school.

7) Who do you talk to most on IM? I don't.

8) If you had to get married now, who would you want to marry? I don't have to get married now.

9) Would you eat sushi? Not if it has fish in it. I don't eat anything with blood.

10) Would you flip off the president? Unlike my classy friends, I think I might.

11) Would you live in a different country? Sure. My dream is to hole myself up in a cabin in Switzerland with a piano, my trumpet, some staff paper, and a TON of records. I want to have the time to really shed.

12) Would you set yourself on fire? No! I'm not like one of those monks who can meditate in flames.

13) Would you date someone younger than you? Sure, why not?

14) Orange juice or apple juice? Orange, but Trader Joe's makes the very best Mango, Orange, Peach juice. It's delicious.

15) Cars or boats? Subways.

16) Favorite type of sock? Warm, without holes.

17) Long or short hair? I try to grow mine out, but I can't handle it. I guess I have to go with short.

18) TV or movie? I do enjoy both. If I have a long attention span, then a movie. If not, good ol' tv.

19) What is your favorite musical instrument? Probably the piano. Hmmmmm, I do enjoy the trumpet and bass clarinet though. Tough question.

20) Do you like walks in the park? I LOVE walks in the park. I'm looking forward to living in New York so I can walk through Central Park. It's huge!

21) Do you think you're attractive? On occasion.

22) Do you believe in life after love? Of course.

23) Do you believe in miracles? Why not?

24) Do you memorize random facts? I know way more random facts than necessary! Ask me something. It's very likely I"ll know the answer. I'm a nerd,

25) Do you ever use your full name? Not often.

26) Have you ever made a promise you'd die to keep? I can't think of anything I've promised that is worth dying for.

27) Have you ever written a song? I prefer to leave that up to Ez; he's great at that shit.

28) Have you ever beat someone up? No, but I did punch Matt Polson in the nose after he bent my finger back.

29) Have you ever made a blood oath? No. I keep my blood to myself thanks.

30) Have you ever been in a mosh pit? Yes. Yes I have.

31) Have you ever snuck anyone into your house? I never had to.

32) Have you been on drugs? Nothing illegal.

33) Last time you were really really mad? I get a little mad fairly often, but I don't remember the last time I was really mad.

34) Do animals go to Heaven? Do any of us go to heaven?

35) If you could change one thing about yourself, it would be: my depression & procrastination.

36) Are all the pigs lined up? No, they are disorderly.

37) What is one thing that annoys you? Questions about pigs.

38) How are you feeling right now? Okay.

39) Last hug? Just about 45 minutes ago.

40) What does the world need less of? Hunger, anger, pollution, war. . .

41) Make up your own question. When was the last time you played Barbies with a 5 year-old? Well, actually, I played Barbies tonight. I didn't really miss it. . .

Coming Back!

I just purchased my plane ticket back to Eau Claire! I'll be flying into Minneapolis & arriving at 1:20 pm on January 16th. I still don't know where I'm going to live, or who I'm going to stay with until I find a place. If you have a couch I can crash on for a few days please let me know. I'm hoping to give all of my friends a call over Christmas break. I know all of you are extremely busy right now & I don't want to add to your stress. I hope everyone is doing well & that your semester is wrapping up okay. I miss all of you & I'm super excited to see you in just one month!!!

Okay, so I'll do a Survey Thingy

YEAR-END SURVEY

1.) Where did you bring in 2006? With my Dad and Tammy at their house.

2.) What was your status by Valentine's Day? Well, that's usually complicated. I got a really sweet valentine from Ez & I had a great date with Shane Leonard. Speaking of Shane, have any of you talked to him recently? He still has some of my stuff (I hope).

3.) Were you in school (anytime this year)? Actually, no! I did, however, play in the Scottsdale Community College Big Band.

4.) How did you earn your keep? I worked at a music store in Boise, I spent 2 LONG weeks at a crazy charter school in Phoenix, took old rich people to tables at a 5 diamond resort, and sang.

5.) Did you ever have to go to the hospital? I think all of my hospitalling occurred in 2005.

6.) Have you ever encountered the police? Not in a negative way.

7.) Where did you go on vacation? Most of my travelling isn't really a vacation. I went to New York twice & went home a couple of times.

8.) What did you purchase that was over $500? Plane tickets, a trumpet, and a flugelhorn.

9.) Did you know anybody who got married? I think I just went to two weddings: Jason & Ivanna and Alex & Tyler. They both were great!

10.) Did you know anybody who passed away? I'm sure I did. I just can't remember right now. I think my Uncle Bill died this year, but it could've been last year.

11.) Have you ran into anybody you graduated high school with? Probably. I saw my best friend Alicia & we went to high school together. It's a lot easier to run into high school buddies when you live in the same state.

12.) Did you move anywhere? Oh my god, that's an understatement! I moved to Boise, then to Scottsdale, now back to Boise, soon to return to Eau Claire.

13.) What sporting events did you go to? I believe I managed to escape all sporting events!

14.) What concerts did you go to? I saw a ton of AMAZING concerts this year!! Besides all of the great stuff at IAJE (Maria Schneider, John Hollenbeck, Monty Alexander. . .) and the awesome people at Centrum (Ingrid Jensen, Benny Green, Jon Wikan, George Cables, Steve Wilson. . .), I saw Geri Allen, the Village Vanguard Band, Ez's Quartet, the Quartet of Happiness, Billy Hart's Academy, my friends in the Uprite Dub Orchestra, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. It was a wonderful year for music.

15.) Are you registered to vote? Not currently. I think I'll register when I plan to be somewhere longer than 4 months.

16.) If so, did you do your patriotic duty on Nov. 7? No, but I will next November when I'm in New York.

17.) Where do you live now? I've lived in Boise for a whole 21 hours.

18.) Describe your birthday. It was really nice. Barry made omelets, I went to big band rehearsal, my mom and I went to the Desert Botanical Gardens, I ate lots of fabulous Mexican food & drank even more terriffic margaritas, watched some sweet Oscar Peterson, and ate some Harvest Pie (it's delicious). I had a nice day.

19.) What's the one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2006? Get serious about the trumpet, live in Arizona, gain this much weight. . .

20.) What is one thing you regretted this year? Leaving my laptop on the floor - it got stepped on.

21.) What's something you learned about yourself? I can be okay even if I don't play trombone.

22.) Any new additions to your family? I don't think so.

23.) What was your best month? July. The last week in July was quite possibly the best week of my life.

24.) What from pop culture will you remember 2006 by? Watching all of the terrible reality shows with Ez on E!

25.) How would you rate this year with a scale from 1 (shitty) to 10 (the shit)? It's really been a roller coaster. I wouldn't call 2006 a good year, but some parts of it were nice. Maybe a 4 or 5. I really think 2007 is looking up!

Home

Well, I made it! I must say that I get better and better at moving each time I do it. I was even able to organize my things as I packed them. That NEVER happens.

It was nice walking into my mom's house. I really feel at home here. I only lived here for 5 months, but it's the closest thing to home I've got. Her house is quiet, not just aurally, but visually. I feel like I can relax here. I don't want to relax too much though, 'cause I have some serious trumpet to practice. I'm excited to practice again. I haven't been in the habit for a long time, but I'm ready to jump back in. Hopefully I'll get in a band back in Eau Claire. The trumpet studio is strong, but there should be a place for me too!

I thought I would have more to say, but I don't really have the energy. I'll update when inspiration hits me - don't hold your breath.

Miss you and love you all.

Heather

bed time

I suppose I should try to get some sleep. I've got some serious packing/cleaning to do tomorrow, plus I have a jazz band concert. It will be my trumpet debut folks. Wish me luck on the high notes!!

Saturday, December 09, 2006

Hooray!!

I sold my trombone! It was kind of a big ordeal; I'll spare you the details. In the end, I was able to purchase a trumpet and the flugelhorn that I have been renting & walk away with $15. I feel like an actual trumpet player now, not a poser trombone player. Yay for me!

stressed

My birthday was great.

I'm playing lead trumpet for a concert on Monday (AHHH!).

I haven't been able to find anyone to buy my trombone.

I hate moving.

My mom is here visiting! Yay! It will be nice to have her around the next couple of days. She's even gong to church with us this morning. Weird. Church. It's weird for me going to church, but I'll pretty much go anywhere if I get paid.

My birthday is tomorrow. I don't really care.

Your 1996 Theme Song Is: Ironic by Alanis Morisette
It's like rain on your wedding dayIt's a free ride when you've already paidIt's the good advice that you just didn't takeWho would've thought ... it figures

It's so true. At one point, Alicia and I thought that it was the theme song for my life. Speaking of Alicia, she made me the most AMAZING birthday card, complete with 13 stanzas of incredible haiku. It's all about my not-so-secret crush on this teacher from my high school. Alicia decided years ago that Mr. Haring and I are destined to be together. I'm not so sure about that, but the idea is funny. I love it.

Well, off to church.

I've gained so much weight since I moved here. Holy shit! I've got to lose like 40 pounds so you guys in Eau Claire will recognize me when I return. Ugh!

Well, there you have it.

You Date Like a Woman
According to studies on dating, you date like a woman. You tend to take romance seriously, and you're not really out for a fling.
A mental and emotional connection always comes first for you.And rushing the physical stuff is likely to turn you off.
You're highly selective when it comes to dating, and some may say you're too picky. You know what you want, and when you find it, you're ready to commit.
Do You Date Like a Man or a Woman?

I AM a chick. It makes sense.

You Aren't Picky at All

I just found the title thingy.

Well, there you have it!!
So it's 3:30 in the morning & I'm wide awake. Damnit!

I feel like I could write a lot, but honestly I don't really feel like it. I went to Portland for the weekend for my sister's 21st birthday. I'm really glad I made the trip. It was great to catch up with some of my friends & to party with my sister. I also spent the night out at my grandparent's house & got to spend some good time with them.

Tomorrow (well today actually) I start playing in the Scottsdale Community College big band. It should be interesting. I haven't really played trumpet in front of people & I'm not so good yet. Oh well, they can take it or leave it.

So now I will copy Mary. Enjoy.

Sunday, October 15, 2006

Well, I haven't written in forever; I just haven't felt like it.

I'm leaving for New York within an hour, but it doesn't really feel like I'm going. Maybe when I get in the plane, but probably not until it get into Manhattan.

My thoughts are with my friends in Eau Claire. I know how tough this anniversary is for all of you. I love you and I'm sorry you're in so much pain.

God bless.

Things have been getting better. Instead of working 3 days on, 1 day off (repeat), I'm working 4 days on, 3 days off! It's so much better. I actually have time to do things that I want to. Speaking of things I want to do. . .I'm taking flugel lessons. My teacher is really great. He's played with some amazing musicians & for some reason he likes me! My lesson on Sunday was close to 3 hours long. I think this trumpet thing is going to stick.

Last weekend Ez & I went up to Sedona to see Benny play at the jazz festival up there. It was super nice to see him & Sedona was absolutely gorgeous. I'm hoping that we'll be able to go sometime on one of my long weekends.

We're going back to New York next month. It should be a great trip. Ez is playing at Dizzy's again & I'll be singing. That will be a fun thing to have on the resume. I'm also planning on spending some time with Benny, Ingrid Jensen, and my New York pals. I can't wait to get back to the city.

Anywho, that's 'bout it for right now. Sorry for the lack of legit posts; I just haven't felt like it.

Much love.

My last post in Boise (probably)!!

My flight leaves in exactly16 hours. And two hours after that, I'm in Phoenix!

I had a nice day. I made 5 cds for my sister, packed a little, and had an amazing dinner at my favorite restaurant. After dinner, I gave my mom an early birthday present. She really loved it, and I felt like I gave a good present for like the first time in forever. I also just got a new laptop! My neighbor had a fairly new laptop & sold it to me for $120 with the wireless card! Yes! I'm pretty excited.

Well, I have a ton to do before I leave tomorrow, so I'm gonna jet. Don't be too surprised if there is another post at 4 in the morning in which I'm totally stressing out!

Thursday, August 03, 2006

Well, it's 3 in the morning and guess who's wide awake??? I'll give you one guess. . . me!
I suppose it's a perfect opportunity to update. I've been thinking about the daunting task of recounting my week in Port Townsend & I've decided mearly to highlight.
Here goes:

-Tuesday: ~Workshop with Nancy King in the morning and afternoon. She's awesome!
~Great bass line clinic with Christoph Luty. Good ideas about transcribing & so forth
~Amazing faculty presents concert. Group #1 was Bruce Forman, Dan Balmer, Chuck Easton, Dave Captein, Dawn Clement, & Gary Hobbs. Group #2 was Nancy King with Steve Christofferson duo, then with Dave Bjur and Pete Swan. Group #3 was Gary Gibson, Randy Porter duo with Steve Wilson, Ingrid Jensen, Dave Captein, & Gary Hobbs. Let me tell you a little about Gary Gibson if you don't already know about him. The man is an awesome percussionist/vibraphonist/steel drum player. I thought the steel drum was going to be some kind of gimmick, but let me tell you, the guy is awesome. He played one of the best versions of "Georgia on my Mind" that I have ever heard!
~Now for one of the BEST parts of the workshop. . .the "Ray Brown Remembered: The Art of the Piano Trio" clinic hosted by Jeff Hamilton, Benny Green, and John Clayton. They shared stories about their own experiences with Ray & also played 4 tunes. It was absolutely beautiful! One of the most touching musical moments at the camp was when they played "Li'l Darlin'" with the intro that Ray wrote. Breathtaking. I was so emotional after the clinic, that Dave had to hold me up. Benny hung on to me for a while while I recovered. It was crazy how everything I was feeling manifested itself into me physically. Wow!
~I observed a piano lesson given by Benny, Tamir Hendelman, & Randy Porter. Benny and Tamir played musical chairs on the piano bench. Nobody ever gets to see something like that. Amazing.

-Wednesday: ~Ingrid Jensen's clinic in the morning was great! She played us tracks from her new album "At Sea" while showing us pictures from her honeymoon in Alaska. The photos and the music were gorgeous! I was able to tell Ingrid how much I love her music. I later found out from Benny that she really liked me! Yes! This was the beginning of my awesome time with Ingrid (my new favorite person).
~Faculty presents concert: Group #1 was Pete Christlieb, Bill Ramsay, Jay Thomas, Tamir Hendelman, Chuck Deardorf, & Gary Hobbs. Group #2 was Bob Florence (solo), then with Jiggs Whigham, then with Kim Richmond, then with Terell Stafford. Beautiful. Bob Florence just radiates love. I spoke to him afterwards and he was more than sweet; his wife was too. Group #3 was Kurt Elling, Bill Mays, Christoph Luty, and Jon Wikan. The band was killing. I don't know. Kurt just doesn't do it for me.
~Ingrid held a rehearsal that night in which I helped out making copies. God, she's an amazing musician.

-Thursday: ~Still trying to figure out what song to sing. So far I've tried: How Insensitive, Since I Fell For You, Beautiful Friendship. . . by Friday I settle on In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning. It turned out to be a good choice.
~Faculty presents concert: Group #1 Dee Daniels, Marc Seales, Christoph Luty, and Clarence Acox. If you ever get a chance to see Dee perform, DO IT! Besides being an amazing singer and musician, she grabs your heart everytime. I've yet to see her be anything less than incredible. What a beautiful person too. She is pure joy and light. I feel so fortunate to have been able to spend the week working with her. Group #2 was Buddy DeFranco, Bill Mays, Dan Balmer, Chuck Deardorf, and Jon Wikan.
~Ingrid's band at the Public House that night = INCREDIBLE. Her band was: Randy Porter (piano), Chuck Deardorf (bass), Jon Wikan (drums/cajon), Bruce Forman (guitar), Steve Wilson (alto sax), and of course, Ingrid Jensen (trumpet/flugel). They killed!

-Friday ~I checked out some combo performances. Ingrid's combo was fantastic. I also got to hang with Nancy for awhile.
~Benny's Art Blakey combo performed that night. I got to know some of the guys in the band (including my good friend Dave Speranza). They were soooo good & such a blast to listen to. The whole room was on their feet and dancing. The band was shaking it & even Benny was moving! Our friend Belinda came up from Portland; it was so nice to see her.
~Went down to the Public House to catch Ingrid's band again. She let me introduce the group for the second set. After they were done, Jon said they'd give me a ride back to camp, so we hung out at the bar. After a couple of beers, Jon and I did tequila shots! What a fun guy! I also got to hang out with Ingrid's step-father, Al. He's a bundle of laughs & just an all around joyful guy.
~Oh yeah! My friend Javier Vergara (from Poncho Sanchez's band) came down and hung out. It was great to see him.

-Saturday: ~Had an amazing morning hanging out at Nancy's pad with Belinda, Benny, Nancy, and Leroy Vinegar's widow Carol. We sad around and chatted for a few hours & Nancy showed me gorgeous pictures of her granddaughter. Fun!
~Caught some great music. Then came the great-great music! Benny played two tunes (Lush Life and Love You Madly) solo before Dee Daniels came out and broke my heart with "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man." Belinda and I were sitting together holding hands and crying. Dee is just so passionate & Benny so sensitive. A perfect pair. Kurt Elling then came out to do a tune with Benny and shat all over it. I don't know. I'd rather hear one note full of soul, than a million "impressive" notes splattered all over the place. Nancy sang "We'll be Together Again" as a personal request by me. She was fabulous. The trio of singers came out to sing "Bye Bye Blackbird." Nice show.
~Said goodbye to Belinda and Benny, then hung out with Nancy until show time. My group began performing at 10 that night. Everybody did so well! I was so proud of everyone!!
~Went to hear Ingrid's band again. Introduced the band again. Drank more with Al and Jon. Ingrid drove me home. I decided to become a trumpet player. Let me say that again I AM SWITCHING TO TRUMPET and I couldn't be more excited about it. Ingrid is going to teach me everything she knows. I'm so lucky to have her as a friend.

As I'm writing, I keep remembering awesome things that happened throughout the week. I don't feel like writing about them, so call me.

I was laying in bed about an hour ago thinking about some of my favorite musicians & it occurred to me that most of them are women. I'm aware that most of the giants are all men, but for some reason, I am attracted to the music made by women. It's not that I'm a man basher; I'm far from it. Maybe I just identify to their experiences. Who knows! I don't think anyone would dispute that Maria Schneider, Joni Mitchell, Ingrid Jensen, Shirley Horn, and Nancy King are awesome.

I think it's time for me to try sleeping again. Boy, I'll be impressed if anyone actually reads this book of mine!

Love

Tuesday, August 01, 2006

I'm a little hesitant to begin writing about my experience in Port Townsend, because I'm afraid that once I start, I may never stop. The following will be completely free wrting; whatever pops into my head at the time is what is written.

I'll begin by saying that I have never had such a wonderful week. I was constantly surrounded by beautiful, loving people, who also happened to be AMAZING musicians. Even the first night was beyond special. There was a faculty concert which included (in alphabetical order): Clarence Acox, Geroge Cables, Steve Christofferson, Jeff Clayton, John Clayton, Pete Christlieb, Dan Balmer, Dee Daniels, Chuck Deardorf, Chuck Easton, Dawn Clement, Kurt Elling, Bob Florence, Bruce Forman, Gary Gibson, Benny Green, Jeff Hamilton, Tamir Hendelman, Gary Hobbs, Ingrid Jensen, Nancy King, Christoph Luty, Bill Mays, Randy Porter, Bill Ramsay, Kim Richmond, Marc Seales, Gary Smulyan, Terell Stafford, Jay Thomas, Jiggs Whigham, and Steve Wilson! That first concert was worth the price of the camp. WOW!
Afterwards I went backstage to find Benny & say hello. It was wonderful to see him & get one of his great hugs. We found some other people who were wanting to jam & we played pretty late. I even sang! Boy, was I nervous to sing in front of him, but I got over it. People began to trickle out, until it was just Benny and I at the piano singing Stevie Wonder tunes. How beautiful. He walked me back to my room at 2 in the morning. Needless to say, returning home in the middle of the night became the norm.

Monday was the first day of classes. I was placed into Vocal Group 1, which was comprised of beginning singers, more or less. I'm so glad I was in group 1; everyone was so sweet & genuinely happy for everyone else. After staff introductions and whatnot, we all went up to the front of the room & sang a chorus of F blues. It was cool to see how unique everyone was & to get a taste of their personality. Of course, when I stepped up, I said "I'm Heather Sessler. I play trombone." It's been hard for me to shake the trombone part of me. Now I can say "I'm Heather Sessler. I sing and play trombone." Well, anyway, I got to give Nancy King a hug after that. Nancy has become such a loving support for me. I now think of her as a surrogate mother of sorts. Now onto the best part of Monday. . .the Faculty Presents concert. The first group to play was: Ingrid Jensen, Gary Smylyan, Kim Richmond, Bruce Forman, Tamir Hendelman, John Clayton, and Jon Wikan. AMAZING!! I don't even have to go into it more than that. Absolutely amazing! Next was George Cables solo. Wow! If you haven't seen George Cables play solo before, do it. He's incredible. For his last number, he invited John Clayton up to play a duet. It was a tune he had written and was beautiful. My good friend Dave Speranza and I had to keep our chins from hitting the floor. Gorgeous! The last group was Steve Wilson, Jeff Clayton, Terell Stafford, Jiggs Whigham, Dan Balmer, Benny Green, Christoph Luty, and Jeff Hamilton. Talk about a killer band!! They played a free, kind of etheral arrangement of "Someday my Prince Will Come." It was beautiful & the whole building was wanting more, so Benny just played the opening to "Moanin'." Holy shit! The band kicked in and swung their asses off! Each solo just got better than the last & I was wondering how they were going to keep the energy going through 7 soloist. I didn't have to worry though, 'cause when Jiggs Whigham came in on his trombone solo, the band nearly dropped out, only to crescendo & blow the roof of of the place. After hearing that, there was no doubt in my mind why Benny played with the Messengers. The music moved me so much, that I actually felt my stomach cramp up. This continued to be a trend & I spent most of the week "sick" from all of the music. It was all positive though.

I'm going to take a break. Just looking at everything that happened on Tuesday and Wednesday, I'm going to have to pace myself.

More later

As you are all aware, I have been blessed with a larger than average derriere. It hasn't always been easy to find jeans with enough room in the seat. Last night I bought "Curvy" jeans. They fit!! I'm quite excited. Ahhh, finally, pants that fit my big ass. But in the words of a good friend of mine, "it's not big, it's nice." Thanks.
